Overexposure
Light touches every human experience, transcending culture, age, and identity. This collection is built around the idea of how light can reveal, conceal, and transform regardless of who is witnessing it. This perspective on inclusivity is important, since it is less a selling point than it is an integrated part of the DNA of the collection. Overexposure focuses on the undeniable importance of both natural and artificial light in everyday life, taking inspiration from light sources varying from dappled sunlight passing through trees, to flickering candlelight or stark and jarring fluorescent lighting. These different lighting conditions not only have an effect on the garments in this collection, but also the emotional state of mind of the wearer and the observer.
Overexposure was developed and designed taking inspiration from primary research using original reference images through the simultaneous and iterative creation of a photography series with the collection. Using this series to inform the development of garments is a unique perspective, as photography is often used in the end-product of fashion design (editorials, campaigns, process documentation), however using photography as a medium and a muse is not often done in the fashion industry. Additionally, there is an emphasis on sustainability in this collection, as many of the materials used are deadstock or secondhand, helping to reduce textile waste in the fashion industry.
